How to Use the Dashboard Views

The dashboard views let you explore housing conditions across the Central Puget Sound region. Pick a geography, move between the Snapshot, Comparison, and Map views to see the data from different angles, and generate interactive reports for more in-depth information about the place you select.

1

Select a Geography

Use the geography selector at the top of the dashboard to choose the place you want to explore. Start typing in the Search by name box, or browse the full list.

Four geography types are available: the Region (the four-county Central Puget Sound region), Counties, Cities & Towns, and Peer Regions (nine comparable metropolitan statistical areas, available in Comparison only). The full region is always available as a built-in point of comparison.

Please note that some smaller places may lack sufficient data to display certain charts; limited sample sizes can also result in more variable estimates.

Move Between Views

Switch between four views to look at your community's housing landscape different ways:

  • Snapshot — a quick read on key housing indicators: demographics, housing supply, rental affordability, homeownership access, income and jobs, and transportation needs.
  • Comparison — place your geography side-by-side with another jurisdiction, the region, or a peer region.
  • Map — patterns and disparities at the census-tract level, including bivariate mapping, HOLC redlining, and job-density layers.
  • Report — detailed, data-driven narratives of housing supply, demand, and affordability conditions for your selected geography.

View the Snapshot & Download Data

The Snapshot groups indicators into categories so you can switch between data on demographics, housing, jobs, and transportation.

Use each chart's menu to download its underlying data as a CSV for your own analysis. To learn more about where the numbers come from, visit the data sources page.

Compare to Other Places

In the Comparison view, use + Add Another Geography to place your selected place next to another jurisdiction in the region, the region as a whole, or one of nine metropolitan peer regions.

Comparing to peers helps surface where your community is distinct and where it shares challenges with similar places across the country.

Look Inside Your Community on the Map

The Map view visualizes housing and demographic patterns at the census-tract level. Select a choropleth data layer to see how a single indicator varies across your selected geography. Use the additional options to change colors, opacity, and breakpoints.

Use bivariate mapping to see how two indicators align — or diverge — across neighborhoods.

Additional layers add historical and economic context, including HOLC redlining boundaries and block-level job density.

Read an Interactive Report

Choose a Report to generate an interactive report for your selected geography — a data-driven narrative with supporting charts, tables, and maps.

Reports are available for individual jurisdictions, counties, and the four-county region, and can be downloaded as PDFs to share or include in your own work.
